Overview

Basements and Underground Structures 2010 builds on the success of previous events to bring you the latest in best practice for digging deep:

Main Day Conference

The £15.9bn Crossrail scheme escaped cuts in the June 2010 Emergency Budget.  Consequently new station and refurb work is continuing.  Any basement construction is valuable as it frees up space above ground and allows developers to benefit from renting an additional floor, generating thousands, if not millions, of pounds in extra rent per month.

Do you understand the geotechnical challenges faced when constructing underground in a densely populated urban area?

This one day conference draws on the expertise of top consultants, contractors and geotechnical specialists from across the industry to give advice on best practice techniques in basement construction and updates on controlling ground movement.  Presentations will showcase case study examples from key London projects such as Crossrail and will highlight the use of innovative techniques and technologies in monitoring works.  There will be sessions that focus on previous geotechnical collapses and what can be learned from these in order to avoid future failures.

Pre-Conference Seminar
With areas of the commercial basement market suffering the effects of the recession, many people are looking to smaller, yet still highly complex, residential basements as key business opportunities.  The number of basement planning applications has doubled in many areas recently as families seek to improve their homes rather than sell in a falling market. Kensington and Chelsea council has approved 616 subterranean plans in the last 27 months.

Join the pre-conference seminar to find out more about the regulations surrounding domestic basements and how to overcome some of the challenges these projects present.

Post-Conference Site Tour

You have heard, in the main day conference, about overcoming the challenges faced in designing Crossrail’s Canary Wharf station.  Take advantage of this opportunity to see, firsthand, the developments that have been made in construction.
